Understand Ontario's demerit point system. How points are assigned, when your licence is at risk, and how to protect your driving record. Free consultation.
For G licence holders: 9+ points triggers a warning letter, 15+ points results in a 30-day suspension. For G1/G2 drivers: 6+ points triggers a warning, 9+ points results in a 60-day suspension. Points stay on your record for 2 years from the offence date.
Demerit points remain on your driving record for 2 years from the date of the offence, not the conviction date. However, the conviction itself stays on your record for 3 years and affects insurance for that entire period.
You cannot remove demerit points early - they automatically expire after 2 years. However, fighting the underlying ticket can prevent points from being added in the first place, which is why it's important to contest tickets before conviction.
A traffic conviction typically affects insurance rates for 3 years from conviction date. Impact varies by insurer and offence. Fighting often costs less than long-term insurance increase.
