Frequently Asked Questions
Can my landlord evict me without reason?
No. In Ontario, landlords can only evict for specific reasons under the Residential Tenancies Act: non-payment of rent, causing damage, illegal activity, interference with others, or landlord's own use. Even then, proper procedures must be followed.
What should I do if I receive an eviction notice?
Don't panic. Read the notice carefully to understand the alleged reason and timeline. For N4 (non-payment), you can void it by paying within 14 days. For other notices, contact us immediately to review your options and prepare a defence.
Can I withhold rent if my landlord won't do repairs?
No, withholding rent is not recommended and can result in eviction for non-payment. Instead, file a T6 application with the LTB for maintenance issues. You may be awarded rent abatement and orders for the landlord to complete repairs.
How long will my LTB case take?
Current processing times vary 3-12 months depending on application type and urgency. We work to move your case forward as efficiently as possible.
