Can I evict a tenant for any reason?
No. Ontario only allows eviction for specific reasons: non-payment, persistent late payment, illegal activity, damage, interference with others, or landlord/purchaser own use.
How do I screen tenants legally?
You can request: rental history, references, credit check (with consent), income verification. You cannot discriminate based on protected grounds like race, family status, or income source.
Can I charge security deposits?
No. Ontario prohibits security/damage deposits. You can only collect first and last month's rent. Last month's rent must be applied to the final month, not damages.
How long will my LTB case take?
