Yes! Licensed paralegals can represent you in Ontario Small Claims Court for claims up to $50,000. Learn when to hire a paralegal vs lawyer.
The principal-amount limit is $50,000 in Ontario (raised from $35,000 effective January 1, 2025). Pre-judgment interest, post-judgment interest, and costs are added on top of that limit.
For most steps, your paralegal can appear on your behalf. The settlement conference is different — Rule 13.02 of the Rules of the Small Claims Court generally requires the parties (not just their representatives) to attend in person, unless the court orders otherwise. Your paralegal will be there with you.
Realistically, most matters reach settlement conference 6–12 months after filing, with trials beyond that. Default judgments (where the defendant doesn't file a Defence in 20 days) can be issued in 30–60 days.
